Hotel Mokum ESF

Hotel Mokum

the heart of Amsterdam on October 16th, 2021. Over six weeks the collective transformed the hotel into a home, a self-proclaimed free space and an oasis in a city smothered by hypergentrification. At the height of its popularity, Hotel Mokum got evicted under the guise of fire safety. The film combines documentary footage, archival materials, and constructed scenes to create a complex and intimate portrait of a hopeful collective and the city they are working to reclaim.

Talk: Spookstad – media strategies against housing struggles

Afterwards, there is a talk hosted by Spookstad: an experimental publishing platform focused on promoting and discussing radical action and culture. In the talk the filmmaker Yannesh Meijman and designer Wouter Stroet will discuss propaganda and media strategies they imply in the collectives they are active in.

Mark Angelo Harrison (Spiral Tribe)

In his new book, A Darker Electricity, Mark Angelo Harrison vividly charts the rapid escalation of the collective’s creative influence, popularity with the people – and notoriety with the Conservative government. It tells the story of how a community of friends came together to self-organise. Setting out on a journey from small squat-scene parties in London, to enormous warehouse raves and free festivals. How, within a year, they had outgrown their overloaded van and had become a mighty convoy of matt-black ex-military vehicles. A convoy that crossed all borders and instigated the Teknivals of Europe.

Mark will present his book and talk about its key themes. Themes that include the commodification of social space, resources and ideas by the imperialist establishment, while it brutally oppresses community culture and asset strips the planet.
