Philosophical festival DRIFT

18 May @ 17:00 - 19 May @ 04:00

DRIFT is tacking this year.

Tacking (overstag gaan) is a maneuver in sailing in which the bow of the sailboat passes through the wind, turning the boat onto the other side. As soon as the rudder is turned at once, the wind strikes the other side of the sails. Therefore, when tacking, one changes course.

DRIFT is tacking this year. This means that we will be going through the wind and changing course. This year we position ourselves as curious passengers looking over the railing of the back of our ship.

“Where is DRIFT headed?”, with this question the collective faces a big challenge. We will explore what it means to change course and will focus on the concept of movement..

You only have to sit still long enough to notice that everything around you is moving. From this mutability of things, Aristotle decided to assume a first Unmoved Mover , which is unchanging and eternal. This existence of a first mover brings with it the eternity of motion. When we engage with this philosophical tradition, we cannot avoid the concept of movement: there has always been movement and there will always be movement.

The questions that arise is whether we have already moved beyond Aristotelian conceptions and how movement is created and transmitted today. Immovability no longer seems to be an attribute possessed only by the Unmoved Mover. Change often presents itself in the imagination as impossible because of the motionlessness of that which is already given. For example, the relentless logic of capital accumulation does not seem subject to movement, and when we find ourselves in need of systemic change, nothing seems to happen. Thus we face a problem here: on the one hand, we experience continuous movement, but on the other, we encounter the immovable.

When we talk about transforming society, we as individuals seem bound by narrow limits. This year, DRIFT seeks to push these limits and expose the praxis that underlies theory. This year, DRIFT acts as a ‘moved mover’, seeking to initiate change. Where can (critical) theory initiate real change? It is time to set the seemingly immovable in motion. In doing so, the content of the lectures always revolves around the question: where can (critical) theory initiate real change? Let’s dive into resistance: join the movement against the immovable.
